Job Description

The Contractor will be supervised by the Assistant Director for Exhibition Design and Production and work closely with the NMAAHC exhibition design, fabrication, and graphic production teams. The Contractor shall perform up to 2080 hours of professional, technical, and non-personal exhibit detailing services in a 12-month period, starting on or about August 1, 2023. Tasks include, but are not necessarily limited to: Assisting with all phases of 2-D and 3-D design, fabrication drawings, and installations. Using imagination, ingenuity, and creativity in designing and organizing information so that each segment of the exhibition visually builds on what has been presented before, anticipates what will come next, and supports the core goals of the exhibition. Producing graphic production files from draft copy, to interim submittals, to final approval by curatorial team or other museum staff. Using a variety of visual tools such as sketches, renderings, and models to develop and explain design concepts and strategies. Rendering original, attractive, engaging designs that ensure information is accessible to a wide audience and is in compliance with the Smithsonian’s interpretation and requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Working with NMAAHC exhibition designers to help plan the techniques and construction methods for all exhibit components taking into consideration the gallery layout; traffic flow; lighting; wall colors; floor treatments; design and fabrication details for exhibit panels, pedestals, cases, and/or supporting props; graphic design for panels and labels; layout for vitrine interiors including pedestals and brackets for artifacts; and architectural, mechanical, electrical and other modifications to the gallery.
