Greater Good Studio is seeking a talented Design Researcher to join our team! We are looking for someone who is empathetic, motivated and organized. You are able to think strategically and to be detail-oriented. You are a strong collaborator, enjoy learning at a quick pace, and are also someone with demonstrated experience making observations and connections about people in diverse contexts. Please note that presently, and for the foreseeable future, our team is working remotely. Because we intend to resume in-person work once it is deemed safe, we are seeking candidates located in, or willing to relocate to, Chicago. Additionally, we are unable to provide sponsorship to applicants who require or will require a work permit. Duties and responsibilities: Design Research and Strategy Contribute to the framing of key questions for research projects Apply, adapt, and create tools and protocols for recruiting, research, and data collection Recruit, screen, and select participants; build relationships with participants through activities such as communications & scheduling Follow protocols for accessibility, informed consent, and other research ethics practices Conduct research in remote and, when appropriate, in-person settings (see above regarding expectations for remote and in-person work) Collect data from various secondary sources including libraries, government documents, and personal contacts; read sources for relevance to research themes; assemble data, documents, and reports Collect and share data from research with internal and external stakeholders using a range of methods and settings Partner with the research and project leads to synthesize research findings into meaningful insights Articulate design opportunities through text, frameworks, sketches and prototypes Advocate from users’ perspectives throughout design and implementation phases (e.g. providing internal design critique) Communicate findings, insights, and recommendations to a range of internal and external audiences Participate in client-facing activities such as calls, meetings, workshops, and presentations Support the successful completion of projects in accordance with their scope of work, timelines, budgets, etc. Support the development and execution of workshops with clients, participants, and other groups Studio Collaboration Participate in studio-wide conversations about potential new projects Join open critiques, ideation sessions, and work reviews across projects Engage in learning conversations related to internal initiatives, studio practices, research methodologies, and more Qualifications 1 to 3 years of experience in qualitative user research, community engagement, and/or other related fields with demonstrated ability to plan research, conduct interviews and observations, analyze secondary research, synthesize insights and communicate compelling findings to multiple stakeholders. Strong experience in human-centered design and collaboration, through professional, academic, and/or volunteer settings. Lived and/or learned experience within under-resourced communities including: personal, professional, and volunteer experience. Experience working with or for the social sector; or significant volunteer experience with a mission-based organization. Willing to travel (once deemed safe and travel advisories are lifted) for research and client workshops.
