Job Description
IDEO.org is a nonprofit design studio on a mission to design a more just and equitable world. We partner with nonprofit organizations, foundations, governments, and communities to design programs, products, and services focused on improving health, economic mobility, and wellbeing. Over the past 10 years, our work has expanded beyond traditional service and product design in the social sector, and we are now regularly working hand-in-hand with communities and local organizations to design interventions in service of more equitable outcomes. Some examples include launching an incubator in Kenya for girl-led solutions to reproductive health, working with communities in Southern Dallas to improve access to quality health care, and working with refugee, immigrant, and migrant communities in the US to ensure everyone has access to reliable information about COVID-19. We’re currently looking for a Visual Storyteller to join our studio in San Francisco. As part of a multi-disciplinary design team, you’ll work closely with our partner organizations and the communities they serve across the U.S. and around the world—identifying opportunities for design, imagining new possibilities, and bringing those ideas to life through engaging visual narratives. This role requires confidence working across a variety of mediums, such as interactive and film, and an appetite for experimentation. You have a passion for building brands, visual storytelling, and social movements. You love pushing your skills to new heights to tackle challenges in fresh and creative ways. You may have started your career as a graphic designer, interactive media, or creating film and video stories. Your passion lies in creating compelling experiences that shift hearts and minds. You’re adept at telling stories that transcend language and culture through emotion and human connection. About You: You’re passionate about human-centered design and social justice, and are inspired by the opportunity to advance approaches that center the voices of people from oppressed and historically marginalized communities in the design process. You’re a prolific experimenter & maker who finds joy in inspiring others to make with you. You take a thoughtful, yet playful approach to creative process and applied design. You’re a culturally sensitive, creative, and resourceful problem solver. You’re willing and able to travel domestically or internationally ~20% of the time. Core Responsibilities: Craft visual narratives that tell the story of a group’s current experience or their future aspirations. This could take many forms including video stories, campaigns, interactive websites, and more. Compile outside inspiration into moodboards that inspire a team’s sense of what’s possible. Create early sketches and prototypes in 2D and time-based mediums to solicit feedback. Deliver resolved designs that demonstrate strategic storytelling and attention to detail. Make early, often, and prolifically to fuel an experimental and iterative design process. Contribute to design projects as a highly collaborative member of a multidisciplinary team. Contribute to IDEO.org’s studio culture. You Have: 2+ years of professional experience in a design consultancy, agency, or equivalent position Portfolio featuring a diverse range of mediums (this could include print design, interactive, digital/UI, film/video, campaigns and movement building or illustration) Strong design fundamentals (color, form, type, layout) in 2D/3D and film/motion with the ability to experiment and teach others through your craft The ability to tell a good story—weaving together strategy, empathy, and narrative to bring stories to life in written and visual form Fluency with Figma, the Adobe Creative Suite, the Google productivity suite, and tools for expressing stories in a time-based medium (Premier, AfterEffects, Cinema 4D, Blender, etc) Fluency in the human-centered design process or a willingness to learn in deep collaboration with multidisciplinary teams What You Can Expect from Us: A diverse and multidisciplinary team that is passionate about advancing our mission to design a more just and inclusive world (Over 50% of IDEO.org’s staff identify as BIPOC and over 50% identify as women).
